“You’re Pretty… Pretty Fired”
In Joseph Diebold’s article, “Iowa Supreme Court: It’s OK to Fire a Woman for Being Too
Attractive,” I find the ruling of the court to be inappropriate; it is simply not a good way to represent the
evolvement we’ve made up to this generation. We teach girls to go to school and get a good education,
so they can get a well-paying career. We tell them this will ensure them that they are set with life and
not have to worry. However, now an all-male Supreme Court has decided that even then their success
might not be secured? They can get fired… for being too good-looking? That is absolutely outrageous
and disgusts me because Nelson most likely worked her butt off to even apply for that position, and it
was taken away by some unprofessional man. As a female with big plans, this makes me extremely
frustrated because now I know one day this could happen to me, or my friends, or any women workers
who are deemed too attractive by their employers.
Nelson’s worries are the same as mine, as she suggested in the article that the court’s ruling
could then act as a gateway. She believes darker-skinned employees could start being replaced with
lighter-skinned employees, and less attractive employees with more attractive employees. That is
because men now know it is alright for them to fire their women employees whenever they want as long
as they say it is because she was too attractive. The court was giving male employers the green light:
“Go ahead. Hire the most attractive employees you can so you get a little eye candy until it becomes too
much to handle, which at that point it is okay for you to fire them. Leave them jobless because you were
sexually attracted to them”. This becomes a matter of “looks come first, education second”. A lady
might as well rate herself on a scale of one to ten on her resume when she applies for a job. This is a
pressing issue that will only become more pressing because it will affect girls at a young age and impact
their beliefs negatively. In the case of this ruling actually becoming a gateway, little girls would begin to
lose belief in the importance of education, and how that will get you farther in life vs your good looks.
They would not think all those beautiful women got those jobs because of how well they paid attention
in school. They would think they were hired because they were pretty… and they probably were.
Diebold’s article also makes me question our nation and its principles. For over fifty years we
have been fighting for equality between the sexes, and now suddenly we have back-tracked in our
progression. Women should not feel, nor be treated like the inferior gender, but here we are, getting
fired for our looks by males who got the OK from other males. This obviously shows the unfair
advantage in the working world that men have. They have been given greater power than women have
been given… because the power is owned and distributed by men. That is not equality between two
genders. That is injustice towards the female gender.
I fully believe these court members were just creating a way to make sex discrimination okay
and legal because they are not actually calling it “sex discrimination”. The article gives a quote by the
court: “-a woman does not lose the protection of our laws prohibiting sex discrimination just because her
employer becomes sexually attracted to her”. This proves their ignorance towards the subject. It is
wrong to me that they believe this was not an act of sex discrimination even though it was indeed based
on the sexual attractiveness of a woman. Not only did I find this aggravating, but also confusing. How
could they rule out the subject of sex discrimination when they only applied this allowance of firing
employees who are too attractive to employees of the female gender?
The article also has me confused for this reason: it states the justices claimed Nelson was fired
“because of facts surrounding her relationship with Knight, including several comments he made about
her clothing”. Those comments that came out of Knight’s mouth were a product of his own failure to
recognize what is okay and what is not okay to say aloud to one’s employee. Knight, and Knight only,
was responsible for his inappropriate actions that he apparently couldn’t refrain himself from. Nelson
was not at fault for Knight’s words or thoughts, yet she was treated as if she was, and therefore
punished, by Knight, and by the Iowa Supreme Court. How can we depend on this court to serve justice
for future women’s right cases when all they served for Nelson was injustice?
This article serves as a reminder to me that the fight for equality between the sexes still goes on,
and it’s a fight I need to participate in. I think it is very crucial that we women are treated with the same
respect then men are. Women should not lose their jobs because their male employers can’t keep their
eyes off them. The article motivates me to do even better in school so I can work my way up to the top,
and be such a good employee that there is absolutely no ethical reason for me to be fired. We need to
fight back.
