WRIT 112
Reuben Ellis
Revised 8/7/13
Essay #2: Field Process Essay: Sustainability within a Context
Learning outcomes: 1, 2
This essay will be a multi-source persuasive essay that develops a thesis pertaining to issues of
sustainability associated with a specific context. Consider using a specific profession or other field of
human endeavor in which you are interested. The essay should include an introduction articulating the
central issue the essay will analyze, a detailed and research-informed discussion, and a conclusion that
brings the essay to closure. The essay will start with a general or theoretical concept of sustainability
and apply it to the context. The essay’s thesis should suggest that understanding of sustainability,
identify the context, and make a claim about the function of sustainability in that context. As part of
researching this topic, you will conduct at least one interview with a person of significant standing
working in a field relevant to the context who has a clear understanding of the context and its
challenges with regard to sustainability-related issues. The essay must include material obtained from
this interview.
Formal requirements:
first and final drafts,
a documented Writing Center tutorial
APA format, including title page and reference page
APA documentation including in-text citations and references;
a minimum of 4 sources, including the interview
1400 words (5 full pages not including title page and reference page) minimum
What to Do
With this project, we will practice using APA style and understand its logic, format, and paradigms.
Structurally and rhetorically, this project will be the same as Essay #1 as described below:
This essay will be a multi-element narrative-based essay exploring a topic of your choice.
Inspired by Thomas Lyon’s description of the “nature essay” in “A Taxonomy of Nature Writing.”
it will incorporate 1st and 3rd person narration, information, and reflection in a fluid, discursive
manner. It is based on the assumption that to understand ourselves and our experiences, we
must use language to represent our experiences to ourselves and others. The essay will embody
how the relationship between narrative, information, and reflection can be employed in terms
of the traditional Aristotelian rhetorical strategies of logos, pathos, and ethos.
Let’s review in class what some of the issues were with Essay #1 and how we might better address them
here. In addition, this essay will encorporate research information from a variety of sources cited
according to APA style. While Essay #1 was a “thinly veiled” research paper in which secondary sources
were used and identified and contextualized in the signal phrases you used to introduce them, Essay #2
will use sources more extensively and will cite them according to APA citation style, that is to say, both
in-text, parenthetically, and on a separate reference page at the end of the essay. Essay #2 must be
formatted according to APA style, and it must include a title page formatted precisely like the example
in the handbook and including all the information stipulated there. APA style is both a format style and
a citation style

formatted according to APA style, and it must include a title page formatted precisely like the example
in the handbook and including all the information stipulated there. APA style is both a format style and
a citation style.
Essay #2, therefore, should consist of three physical parts:
Title page
The essay itself
The reference page
The title page should include all the information that appeared in the upper left of the first page in Essay
#1. All pages should include a running head at the top of the page against the left margin. The essay
itself should begin on the next page. It should begin with the title restated from the title page. The
reference list is a complete list of the sources actually used in the paper. It should provide complete
bibliographic information. It should include the required interview. It should follow APA style exactly.
A successful essay shows understanding of the subject and uses sources to argue for the writer’s thesis.
Source information is integrated fluidly in with the writer’s argument. Source information is introduced
with signal phrases in most cases. It is explained, and the writer interprets how source information
relates to his/her argument. In other words, if a source, for example provides evidence that a certain
aspect of the thesis is credible, explain how and/or why. Each time a source is used, it is cited
parenthetically. Use both (1) quotations and (2) summary and paraphrase. Both are cited.
In terms of content, this paper should demonstrate thorough knowledge and understanding of (1) the
writer’s interpretation of sustainability, (2) the context in which sustainability is being analyzed, and (3)
how situations, actions, or institutions within that context are or are not sustainable.
