It is the duty of any healthcare provider to ensure that their patients have access to the
best services. As such, most of the healthcare providers have research departments that conduct
research and provide a recommendation for the best service. In this case study, the aim is to
analyze how one provider retooled its collections (Souza & McCarty, 2007). It was an effort of
the Sutter health which aimed at increasing its point-of-service collections. It would also improve
the healthcare’s overall revenue cycle. The health care took the steps to measure the performance
using a handful of specific primary benchmarks. The approach would also empower its PFS staff
as they take the responsibility of handling all accounts. The health provider would also ensure an
analysis of each registration using a rules engine. As such, they would identify the patient’s
problems before they leave the registration desk. Finally, the approach would ensure that the PFS
staff would receive appropriate and comprehensive training to work effectively under the new
system.
Sutter Health, which is one of Northern California’s largest health providers, in the year
2006, committed itself to empowering its PFS staff by giving them the necessary tools to
improve patient payment collections. The health care took the decision after reading the
recommendations of the financial approach. Sutter Health, being a not-for-profit communitybased healthcare and hospital system based, its aim was to provide effective medical services. To
achieve this goal, the administration required to take measures that would ensure effectiveness in
the service delivery. The health care faced diverse challenges and problems such as the presence
of a large number of employees including 48,000 physicians, and other volunteers (Souza &
McCarty, 2007). This presented a requirement for a system that would allow registration of the
employees, volunteers, and the patients.

The article by Souza and McCarty provided an approach where a healthcare changed its
registration and revenue collection system. The article titled “From Bottom to Top described the
retooling approach of one provider which promoted its operations. The article provided data and
analysis of research that indicated how this healthcare system is on the list of the largest health
care providers. The article also analyzed how the health care maneuvered during the
implementation the entire strategy. According to the article, the revenue and payment collection
from services provided and the new patients, the health care implemented an improved system
that allowed storage of crucial information concerning patients. Further, in the payment of
employees, the system provided the information concerning a specific employee such as the area
of work, department, and the amount of pay. As such, the system reduced the congestion and
allowed fast response for the workers.
According to Souza and McCarty, the collection system assisted the department of the
accounts receivable in developing solutions to its problems. The approach aided in the
developing an effective financial management approach of any health set up. The system further
solved the key problems faced by Sutter Health such as confining departmental information in
one administration. Before the implementation of this system, each facility in the health care
acted independently in the information.
In the study of healthcare financial management, there are various articles that have
analyzed this research. There have been different methods which health cares have implemented
in their attempt to provide better services to the patients. The aim of these methods is to
consolidate services in one holding where the information can be stored. These articles have also
showed positive outcomes of various methods. The article by Souza and McCarty will be used in
the completion of this case study by providing the necessary information.
