Thesis Statement
The juvenile justice system has proven to be a failure, and should be reconstructed. With
minimal consequences, it continues to be a revolving door for juvenile offenders that go
unpunished.
Outline
I. The Juvenile Justice system is based on a point system, allowing juvenile offenders to
commit crimes without immediate punishment unless the juvenile has obtained the
necessary points.
◦ The offense determines the number of points the juvenile receives.
◦ The juvenile often returns home the same night as the crime occurred.
◦ The juvenile offender often repeats behavior as a result of no consequence.
II. Juvenile offenders who display mental health disabilities are usually misplaced and do
not receive the proper treatment needed.
◦ Juvenile Detention centers and programs are more focused on the punishment of the
crime and temporary solution, instead of the individual need of the juvenile.
◦ Juveniles offenders are not properly assessed for mental health patterns which
prevents them from getting the proper treatment that may be required.
◦ As a result of untreated mental health issues, juveniles with untreated mental health
issues often go on to commit more heinous acts of crime.
III. In conclusion, The Juvenile justice system continues to be a failure to society, but, more
importantly, a failure to our youth. Without intervention, the juvenile justice system will
continue to be a revolving door for juvenile offenders.
